Where We Carry Out Roofing Work in Surrey

We carry out roofing work up through Surrey from our base in Sussex, covering the southern half of the county around Reigate, Dorking, Leatherhead, Godstone and the Downs villages, and north and west from there. Surrey is a large county and the properties in it vary enormously, from Victorian villas to modern development, so the sensible first step is usually a conversation about the roof rather than an assumption based on the postcode. Tell us where you are and what the roof is doing and we will take it from there.

The Roofs You Find Across Surrey

From Roof Installations to Roof Repairs

Surrey has some of the largest and most complicated domestic roofs in the South East. Victorian and Edwardian villas with multiple gables, valleys and dormers; substantial inter war and nineteen thirties housing with tile hung elevations; post war estates on concrete interlocking; and a great deal of newer development with flat roofed extensions and garden rooms. The pattern that matters is that a bigger, more broken up roof has far more junctions, and junctions are where roofs leak.

New Roofs for Surrey Homes and Commercial Buildings

Tailored Roofing Solutions for Your Property

A new roof starts underneath the covering. We strip back, check the battens, underlay and rafters, and put right whatever the old roof was hiding before anything new goes on. On the larger Surrey roofs there is usually more to find, simply because there is more roof and more junctions to it. Everything is laid to the manufacturer’s specification so the warranty stands behind it.

Full Re-Roofing and Roof Replacement in Surrey

Extend Your Property's Lifespan With a New Roof

Roofs get replaced when the covering has aged out rather than after one failure: tiles slipping every winter, mortar gone from ridge and verge, underlay that tears at a touch. On a big Surrey roof the sums are worth doing carefully, because repeated patch repairs across a large area add up faster than people expect. We will tell you honestly when a roof still has years left in it.

Roof Repairs and Leak Tracing in Surrey

Protect Your Home from Leaks and Damage

We trace a leak to where the water is getting in rather than to where it shows on the ceiling, which on a complicated roof can be a long way apart. Valleys, abutments and the junctions around dormers account for most of what we are called to in Surrey, along with debris that has stopped a valley draining. Small repairs done early cost far less than the ceiling that follows if they are left.

Flat Roofing and Waterproofing on Surrey Properties

Durable and Low Maintenance Flat Roofing Solutions

Flat roofs across Surrey sit on extensions, garages, dormers, garden rooms, roof terraces and commercial buildings. We install and repair felt, single ply, EPDM and GRP fibreglass, set the falls so water reaches the outlets rather than standing, and detail the upstands and abutments properly. Flat roofs fail at their edges and junctions rather than out in the middle, so that is where the work really is.

Tiling and Slating on Surrey Pitched Roofs

Aesthetic and Durable Roofing Solutions

Clay tile and natural slate on the older villas, concrete interlocking across the later estates. We match size, profile and colour as closely as we can source when new material is needed, and weathered tiles never match new exactly, so we say so before you commit rather than after. On a roof with several gables and valleys the detailing at those junctions matters more than the tile itself.

Green Roof Systems for Surrey Buildings

Eco Friendly Roofing for Energy Efficiency

A green roof needs a deck that will carry the loading, the right falls, and a waterproofing layer designed to sit beneath a growing medium. In Surrey the practical candidates are usually garden rooms, extensions, garages and outbuildings, and newer development where the weight was designed in from the start. We survey before specifying anything and will say plainly if a roof is not suited to one.

Hot Melt Waterproofing for Surrey Flat, Terrace and Podium Roofs

Robust Waterproofing for Flat Roofs, Green Roofs & High-Traffic Areas

Hot melt is a monolithic waterproofing system, laid hot so that it bonds completely to the deck with no seams or laps to fail. It earns its place where a leak would be expensive and disruptive to trace, and where the waterproofing sits beneath something else: a roof terrace, a podium deck, a car park or the build up of a green roof. Because the membrane bonds fully to the substrate, water cannot track between layers, so a defect stays where it happened rather than surfacing somewhere else entirely.

In Surrey that most often means roof terraces and podium decks on larger properties and newer developments, where something is built over the waterproofing and taking it up again later would be a serious job. It is one of our own core systems rather than something we subcontract, and we survey the deck and the existing build up before specifying it.

What Our Clients Have To Say

Trees, Shade and Complex Roof Junctions on Surrey Property

Your Local Surrey Roofing Experts

Surrey is heavily wooded, and mature trees over a complicated roof are a slow problem rather than a dramatic one. Leaf fall collects in valleys and behind parapets where it holds water instead of letting it run, shaded slopes stay damp and grow moss, and overhanging limbs scour a covering every time it blows. None of that announces itself. It shows up as a damp patch on a top floor ceiling a couple of winters after the valley first stopped draining properly.

Frequently Asked Roofing Questions in Surrey

Surrey covers everything from the North Downs and the Surrey Hills AONB through the commuter belts around Guildford, Woking, Redhill and Reigate to the heath country near Frensham and Elstead. Roofs here see mainly inland pressures: westerly and south-westerly autumn gales test ridge tiles and chimney pointing on exposed properties, especially on elevated Downs and ridge sites. Heavy tree cover across the county means autumn leaf fall and storm-fallen branches block gutters and valleys quickly. Frost damage to cracked pointing is the main winter risk. Salt-related corrosion is not a factor in Surrey.

Yes. Surrey has hundreds of conservation areas spread across its 11 borough and district councils, including Waverley, Guildford, Mole Valley, Reigate and Banstead, Tandridge, Surrey Heath, Spelthorne, Elmbridge, Runnymede, Woking and Epsom and Ewell. Several areas also fall within the Surrey Hills National Landscape. Listed building consent and planning consent are the homeowner’s responsibility and depend on the relevant borough council. We recommend checking with the right local council before any roof work begins, and we will work to whatever specification they approve.

Surrey’s housing stock is varied. The Surrey Hills villages (Wonersh, Shere, Holmbury) have timber-framed and tile-hung cottages with clay tile or peg tile. The commuter towns (Redhill, Reigate, Woking, Guildford) have large stocks of Victorian and Edwardian terraces with natural-slate roofs, inter-war semis and post-war estates with clay tile or concrete interlocking tiles. The heath country (Elstead, Frensham, Hindhead) has brick and timber-framed cottages with clay tile. Modern developments use concrete tile and EPDM. Each requires a different approach.

After a strong westerly or south-westerly blow, look for slipped, cracked or missing tiles and slates, dislodged ridge or hip tiles, fallen branches across roof slopes, leaf-fall and debris blocking valleys and gutters, and damp patches on top-floor ceilings or chimney breasts. Storm-fallen tree limbs are a particular risk across Surrey given the high tree cover. If you spot anything, get it covered or assessed before the next weather front arrives.

We work across Surrey from a base in Sussex. The southern half of the county, around Reigate, Dorking, Leatherhead, Godstone and the Downs villages, is ground we are on regularly, and we travel north and west from there. If you are not certain whether your address is one we cover, the quickest thing is to ask. It costs nothing to find out, and we would far rather you asked than assumed one way or the other.

It changes where the risk sits. A big roof with several gables, valleys and dormers has far more junctions than a simple pitch, and junctions are where roofs leak. It also means a survey takes longer and needs to be done properly rather than from the ground, because the parts that fail are usually the parts you cannot see from the drive. The materials are rarely the difficult bit on a roof like that. The detailing is.

It causes slow problems rather than dramatic ones, which is why they get missed. Leaf fall collects in valleys and behind parapets and holds water instead of letting it run away, shaded slopes stay damp and grow moss, and overhanging limbs scour the covering every time it blows. None of it announces itself. It usually turns up as a damp patch on a top floor ceiling a couple of winters after the valley first stopped draining properly.

Flat roofs generally lend themselves to it, because panels can be angled and positioned for efficiency rather than being fixed to whatever pitch the roof happens to have. The roof underneath is the part worth checking first. We can assess the roof and advise on the setup, and if the covering is near the end of its life it is far cheaper to deal with that before an array goes on than to lift and refit afterwards.

It is a flat roof with something built over the top of it: a walk on terrace, paving, a deck, or the growing medium of a green roof. That changes the problem, because if the waterproofing fails you are lifting whatever sits above it before you can even find the fault. Hot melt suits this because it is laid hot and bonds fully to the deck with no seams, so water cannot track between layers and a defect stays where it happened. Surrey has a lot of this on larger and newer properties.

Yes. Surveys and quotes are free across the areas we cover, they come in writing, and there is no obligation attached to either. Distance can affect how a job is scheduled, particularly something small that would need more than one visit, and if it makes any difference to what we quote we say so up front rather than adding it on afterwards. You will know what you are looking at before you decide anything.
