It is the roof form behind a great many Brighton parapets: two pitches falling inwards to meet in a valley gutter that runs the length of the property, rather than a single ridge shedding water to the front and back. From the street you see a parapet wall and no roof at all. The trouble is that all the water off both slopes is being handled by one hidden gutter, usually lined in lead and often draining through the building. Block it or split the lining and the water has nowhere to go except inside.
That lining is doing the hardest job on the roof and it is the part nobody looks at. Lead moves with temperature, so it fails at the joints and at any point where it has been fixed too rigidly, and a lining that was patched rather than properly reworked usually fails again in the same place. Debris makes it worse by holding water against it. Sometimes a length can be reworked, sometimes the run needs relining properly, and the honest answer depends on what the survey finds rather than on what is cheapest to say on the phone.

Anything that has to carry water away, because that is what fails under load. On a parapet roof that means the central valley and its outlets, which should be clear rather than holding debris. Elsewhere, look for slipped or lifted slates, flashings that have started to pull away at an abutment, and staining appearing on a top floor ceiling in heavy rain. Autumn is the moment to deal with it: the same fault in December costs a great deal more, because by then it has been running for months.
